JUVÉDERM™ Side Effects

JUVÉDERM™ is a dermal filler that can add volume to lines and wrinkles, plump up the cheeks, and fill in others areas of the face that have lost facial fat and collagen as a result of aging. This treatment works by replacing hyaluronic acid, which absorbs moisture and keeps the face looking youthful. Because hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the body, this treatment is safe and generally does not result in adverse symptoms such as allergic reaction.

However, the JUVÉDERM™ injection process is associated with some short-term side effects. Swelling

Some patients may notice swelling at the injection site in the first day or two after treatment. This occurs in response to the injection. Swelling can be greatly minimized by applying a cold compress to the treatment area in the first few hours after surgery. Try applying the compress to the face for 20 minutes, and then remove it for 20 minutes. Repeat as needed.

Redness

Some patients may notice some redness in the area of the injection in response to irritation. This side effect can also be reduced with the use of a cold compress.

Tenderness

Patients may experience lingering tenderness at the injection site for a couple of days after the JUVÉDERM™ injections are administered. This can be controlled with use of a cold compress and over-the-counter pain medication. In most cases, patients don’t notice any discomfort unless they touch the injection site, which should be avoided.

Firmness

The skin and underlying tissues may feel overly firm for a couple of days after the injections are administered. This is normal and this effect will soften in a few days.

Bruising

Patients with sensitive skin that is more prone to bruising may experience bruising at the injection site. This is more likely to occur if JUVÉDERM™ is injected into the delicate areas of the face, such as under the eyes.

Bruising is the side effect that may take the longest to dissipate. In some cases, bruising fades in a few days, while it may take up to a week or two in other cases. The application of a cold compress can reduce bruising, while make-up can be applied to minimize its appearance.

Bumps

Some patients have reported small lumps or bumps after JUVÉDERM™ treatment. These typically subside within 10 days of treatment.

Itching

An itching sensation may occur around the treatment site after JUVÉDERM™ is injected. While it may be tempting to scratch at the injection site, try to avoid touching the area. Instead, apply a cold compress to minimize discomfort. The itching sensation should fade within a few days of treatment.
